Centering Learners By Design

We are educators, administrators, and change-makers committed to supporting educators, schools, districts, and states realize their vision for learner-centered education.

Why learner-centered education?

In a learner-centered paradigm young people are prepared to embrace challenges, navigate complex situations, leverage technology to solve problems, create efficiencies, and learn how to learn as the world and workplace evolve.

How do we get there?

✔️ Define whole-learner outcomes that take into account skills, habits, knowledge to thrive in a modern world.

✔️ Design meaningful learning experiences to achieve your desired outcomes.

✔️ Create enabling conditions and systems that support the desired outcomes and learning experiences.

“Learner-Centered Collaborative has created a learning environment for site leaders and their teams to plan with intent, focus keenly on how improvement efforts align and support instructional areas of focus, and find common points of interest with other sites to ensure quality collaboration.”

– Rachel Gil, Instructional Coach, Santa Ana Unified School District

“Having a clear and aligned Framework for the Future has been so positive for our district—and the true payoff is walking through classes and seeing our learning model in action with students and teachers as we reimagine learning.”

– Kim Kuklensi, Principal, Mesa Union School District

“I used to think I had to design all of the instruction, but if it’s learner centered, there’s no reason why students cannot be part of that process as well.”

– Teacher, Middlesboro Independent Schools, Kentucky

“Learner-Centered Collaborative has been instrumental in the transformative journey that we are on in Santa Ana Unified School District….We’ve taken a multi-pronged approach to the work, with Learner-Centered Collaborative serving as thought partners for district leadership, supporting and facilitating principals meetings as well as instructional learning walks at school sites across the district.”

– Dr. Lorraine Perez, Deputy Superintendent Educational Services, Santa Ana Unified School District

“Materials provided were very engaging and relevant, and there were plenty of opportunities given to engage in meaningful ways, both alone and in small groups, to brainstorm and explore how they can be used in our own classroom environments.”

– Teacher, Colorado Springs School District, Colorado

“I am really enjoying our sessions! You do a nice job of breaking things up so it moves quickly enough to keep everyone’s attention. You seem to be genuinely excited about the work, which is infectious.”

– District participant, Learner-Centered Leadership Pathway, Laguna Beach Unified School District

It is critical for learners to develop skills and competencies in authentic contexts where they solve problems that matter to them.

Project-based learning, maker learning, and community- based learning all provide authentic learning opportunities, but they can be hard to implement with fidelity without the proper support and enabling conditions in place.

The Authentic Learning Matrix tool is designed to support teams to develop plans for advancing learners through an Authentic Learning continuum—from connection (transactional engagements with the community) to empowerment (authenticity is embedded in learning).

As the end of the year draws near, the energy and hard work with our partners isn't slowing down!

The @eusd_learns Executive Team was in deep ideation and creation mode this week focused on scorecard design. The conversation was rich with a lot of push and pull on how the team seeks to define success in their shift to a learner-centered paradigm.

During the Forge Futures Summit, we got to visit our friends @duquesnecitysd and explore learning in action. Anyone want to get a coffee at the diner?

Last but not least, we had three different cohorts come together @santaanausd.

The Innovation and Design Cohort wrapped up their year of work. Over four sessions, the team worked through three online courses in our Authentic Learning Pathway and developed some incredible learner progressions and suggestions for how they can be used in an ideal state. Their supervisors joined them in the last hour to do a “listening session.”

The Ed Services leadership team deepened capacity around the Framework, how to speak to it with warmth and confidence, and how to align existing bodies of work to the Framework elements.

And, the final Principal Session of the year focused on collaborating to communicate the Framework as well as provide input on Big Moves.

Thank you to all our partners who continue making learner-centered education a staple of their local communities!
We are thrilled to feature Superintendent Dr. Andrée Grey from @encinitas_usd as our Catalyzer of the Month!

Dr. Grey has exemplified visionary leadership through her inclusive approach to educational planning and commitment to environmental sustainability.

Under Dr. Grey's stewardship, Encinitas Union has developed a district-wide Framework for the Future, meticulously crafted to mirror the community's core priorities. This framework has been shaped through a highly collaborative process, ensuring educators, parents, students, and community voices significantly influence the educational direction.

Moreover, Dr. Grey's innovative leadership extends into a collaborative research partnership with UC San Diego, focused on understanding and enhancing educator flourishing. This partnership underscores her commitment to educational excellence and the well-being of the educators within her district.

Her efforts showcase a profound dedication to fostering educational environments that are academically rigorous and nurturing and responsive to the ecological values of the community, making her story an essential narrative in our discussions on transformative education.
